A deadly grenade explosion rocked the Idi-Araba area of Mushin, Lagos, on Thursday, killing one scavenger and leaving three others seriously injured.

The explosion occurred around noon at a scrap metal yard where a group of scavengers was reportedly trying to dismantle a military-grade grenade.

The device suddenly detonated during the process, instantly killing one of them and injuring the rest.

According to a resident, Akin Olawale, the blast caused panic across the neighborhood as people fled for safety upon hearing the loud explosion.

Security operatives were immediately alerted, and police later confirmed that the explosion was indeed caused by a grenade.

The group of scavengers had been attempting to take the device apart when it went off unexpectedly.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police recovered two more undetonated grenades, raising concerns about the dangerous materials being handled in the area.

Another eyewitness, who chose to stay anonymous for security reasons, said the injured victims were quickly rushed to a hospital.

He recalled seeing them badly wounded inside a vehicle that stopped briefly near a nearby filling station.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the Explosive and Ordinance Department had cordoned off the area and neutralized any further threats. He added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
