2027: We will send Tinubu back to Lagos, says Adewole Adeboyo, hints Atiku, Obi defection to SDP

Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi are in discussions to join his party.
In an appearance on ‘Sunday Politics’ a program anchored by Channels TV, Adebayo hinted that a merger between the two prominent politicians and his SDP would be a strong force to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and potentially retire President Bola Tinubu to Lagos.
Abubakar and Obi, who ran for president in 2023 under the platforms of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), respectively, have faced public scrutiny over their frequent joint appearances, sparking speculation of a potential defection.
However, both politicians have consistently denied such rumors, reaffirming their loyalty to their current political parties.
Despite these denials, Adebayo revealed that negotiations are taking place between the allies of both politicians and the SDP, indicating that Obi may be preparing to join the party.
He made it clear that the SDP is open to welcoming new members and has been active in doing so.
“We are seeing a lot of people joining my party, and we are open to them,” Adebayo stated. “There is a slight challenge with some, particularly those who may not be accustomed to our disciplined culture. Some come from backgrounds where rules are not followed strictly, but we are managing that. We believe their inclusion will strengthen the party.”
Adebayo mentioned prominent figures like former Governor Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and even former Governor Nasir el-Rufai as potential additions to the party.
However, when asked directly about Obi’s involvement, he acknowledged that it remains speculative until official announcements are made.
“Until someone officially joins, we can’t be certain,” he said. “But I’ve heard from reliable sources and the SDP’s financial secretary that discussions are ongoing. We are prepared to welcome everyone.”
Adebayo also expressed confidence that the SDP’s transparent processes and strong internal culture could offer a credible alternative to Nigerians.
He added that if the party could maintain its discipline and follow its established rules, it would be in a position to offer a strong challenge to the APC in the 2027 elections, ultimately securing a victory that could end President Tinubu’s rule.
Meanwhile, Tope Fasua, the president’s special adviser on economic affairs, downplayed the possibility of Tinubu being ousted in 2027, attributing the opposition’s perceived weakness and frustration as key factors.
