Europa League: Onana faces backlash after Man Utd’s 2-2 draw against Lyon

Manchester United’s hopes of advancing in the Europa League remain uncertain after a 2-2 draw against Lyon in the first leg of their quarter-final clash, with goalkeeper André Onana facing heavy criticism for two major mistakes.
The French side took the lead 25 minutes into the match when Thiago Almada’s wide free-kick somehow slipped through Onana’s hands, handing Lyon the opening goal.
Although United managed to bounce back and turn the game around to lead 2-1, another costly error from the Cameroonian keeper in the closing stages allowed Rayan Cherki to tap in the equaliser, cancelling their advantage.
With this latest performance, Onana has now recorded nine errors that have led directly to goals in all competitions since the beginning of last season—the highest by any goalkeeper currently in a Premier League club.
The draw now means everything will be decided in the return leg at Old Trafford next Thursday, with both teams still very much in the race to reach the semi-finals.
