“Pharaoh, Let My People Go!” — Rivers Women protest State of Emergency, demand Fubara’s reinstatement

Hundreds of women in Rivers State took to the streets on Friday, staging a powerful protest march towards the State Government House in Port Harcourt to demand an end to the state of emergency and the immediate return of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Clad in black and chanting “Pharaoh, let my people go!”, the women voiced their concern over the appointment of a Sole Administrator to govern the state, calling it a direct assault on democracy and the will of the people.

The protesters, drawn from various local government areas across the state, demanded the lifting of the emergency rule imposed on March 18 and a return to democratic governance.
Their chants echoed through the streets, symbolizing a deep yearning for justice, leadership restoration, and constitutional order.
Speaking on behalf of the group, one of the leaders said, “This is not about politics, it’s about our right to choose. Rivers people voted for Governor Fubara. He must be allowed to lead. We didn’t elect a Pharaoh.”
The protest adds to growing national concern over the legality of the federal government’s intervention in the state, following the controversial appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd) as Sole Administrator. Legal experts and political figures have widely condemned the move as unconstitutional.
Security operatives maintained a calm presence as the women marched peacefully, demanding that the voice of the people be respected and democracy restored without further delay.
